Royalty free music is awesome because it allows you to easily purchase and use the music you love, when you want (read here for more info on what royalty free music is). However, before purchasing, you need to know what license to purchase. Here’s our easy guide to understanding which license is perfect for you.
License A – Media Performers License
AKA: “Blanket License”
For creating a media product that is distinctly different than a music product. You have full usage rights for life, in as many projects as you like. This is our most popular license!
This license can be used for:
- Movie, short film, TV production
- Web movies like YouTube and Vimeo productions
- Television and web commercials
- Radio commercials
- Radio shows
- Podcasting
- Applications and games
- Business or other presentations
This license is CAN NOT be used for:
- Creating a new music product
- Sampling into other musical works
- Musical performances to an audience in any form
- Distribution on any media including compact disk, USB, or any other computer storage media
- Digital downloads
License B – Public Performance License
Used where the song is played in it’s existing format and the end product is a presentation of the music itself.
This license can be used for:
- Restaurant and Retail background music
- Elevators and waiting rooms
- On Hold systems
- Music venue filler (between liver performances) music.
This license CAN NOT be used for:
- Creating a new music product
- Sampling into other musical works
- Distribution on any media including compact disk, USB, or any other computer storage media
- Digital downloads
Extended Licenses
These licenses are used for distribution of the music itself. This allows you to duplicate and resell the music as CDs, MP3s, or other digital formats.
This license can be used for:
- Corporate giveaways
- Gifts or incentives
- Bundled with your products or devices
- CDs for sale at a retail or online outlet.
This license CAN NOT be used for:
- Creating new music utilizing the purchased tracks
- Sampling into other musical works
